______________ Coming Monday, August 2nd!
The Newest Bar in Herndon! On Dec 1st, the VA Government banned smoking; you know my views about freedom, but regardless, the bill was passed and on Dec 1st all my smoking regulars hit the sidewalk. Sounds like a good thing, and for me and my health, it is. But...... Immediately the "fresh" air inside the bar area turned to a foul odor of stale beer and rotted wood. The smoke normally covered up the odor, and the soup of the day didn't hurt either! The cold weather froze up a lot of the odor under the bar area until the sun came out in April. The smell was pretty bad behind the bar. The word spread about the terrible scent at Jimmy's. Our business began to suffer and our reputation became a negative one. "Jimmy, your bar stinks man!" was a familar call when I walked into nearby establishments. The bar was actually built in 1985 by Foot Annekins. The bottom of it was rotting away. The ground beneath it had 25 years of spilled beer.. Some of the wood under there may have dated back to the 1890's. On May 2nd, myself and my best friend, Chuck Brown from CB's Professional Services, pulled together everyone we could and went to war with the odor. We closed down the bar area..keeping the lounge and dining room open. We set up a "skeleten bar" for the bartenders to use... plastic cups, sodas from bottles, etc.... no glass washer... we made our patrons use the side door... and use the "dry bar" as the real bar. About 15 of us worked around the clock. We took out the bar itself and the floor behind it. The smell the 1st 2/3 days was enough to kill an elephant. We lost a TON of business those days, mostly to the brand new Irish Pub across the street! (Your welcome Moose!!) We worked from Sunday, May 2nd at 2am through Friday May 7th at 10:30am. We did not finish, but we were able to open the bar area for the weekend business.. The bar had duct tape for trim, no stain, the tile was not finished, it was work in progress. After 4 busy nights at Jimmy's, we were able to get back to work on Tuesday May 11th at 2am. We finished (for the most part) on Thursday, May 13th at 5pm! A few final touches and plumbing work was completed on Friday afternoon the next day. Ahhhh..the smell is gone. The bar is and looks new! The word is now out that Jimmy's is clean and new and smoke free and odor free!! The Newest bar in Herndon! Today (May 16th) was my 1st day home since May 1st. Mo and Kelsey almost called the cops on me thinking I was an intruder. Yayyy!! So happy. And so broke!!!!! LOL We actually dug out 4 feet of dirt and clay that was soaked in beer (and mold) under the bar. We replaced a major support beam. We installed a sump pump. New flooring, new plumbing, new electricity, new vents, new everything. The list goes on. During this time, we hosted 3 seperate fundraisers and brought in over 4K for various charites. On the night we reopened, May 13th, another 4k was raised for charities through a date auction. The party never stops at Jimmy's! So...now we are literally "digging out" of a huge financial hole. The bank has been fantastic covering for us, the staff has been angelistic holding their paychecks, our landlord is helping as well. I am confident that in no time at all we will be back on top of the world, not just with our popularity, but with our bank account as well! We also plan on building picture frames and keychains from the former bar top to sell for charity! Meanwhile..it seems a bit of Hollywoood has found us... we have been asked to allow a movie company to take over on May 24 and 25 from 4am until 4pm both days. The movie is called "For the Glory" http://fortheglorythemovie.com It's a true story of a soccer player from this area! We will be closed during the filming, but we will be able to cater, as well as have to go food for pick up! So, please come in soon and see, and smell!, the Newest bar in Town! Too many people to thank this time around. Great job. You just helped rebuild history. I am the most blessed broke guy you'll ever know. Love you all, LONG LIVE Jimmy's Old Town Tavern! Jimmy
